If you were to paint quintessential country Australia, you would paint the North Burnett. Rolling hills and stunning mountains, fields of crops interspersed with thick patches of bush, all teeming with native wildlife and birdlife. Post-COVID, regional Australia has seen incredible growth as we rediscover the beauty and benefits of living and holidaying outside of cities, and the North Burnett's beautiful landscapes and friendly, art-filled towns are case in point.
The drive into the North Burnett from Childers will take you through rolling hills covered in woodland and scrub. Heavily cleared for agriculture and grazing over the past 250 years, there are pockets that give an insight into the rainforest, riparian forest, wet and dry eucalypt forest that would have existed for thousands of years under the custodianship of the Traditional Owners. Be ready to be awed as you crest the hills around Biggenden and see Mount Walsh for the first time, with its spectacular granite formations.
Biggenden is a small town with big heart, and the start of the North Burnett art trail. In Edward St, the main street, lies the Rose of the Burnett, giant rose sculptures, created by Craig Nelson and installed in 2016 for theBiggenden Apex Rose Festival, and Beiers Park is home to The Pioneer, by Dave Machen, while the Biggenden Bottle Treealso by Craig Nelson, is made up over over 1km of 5mm cut steel and has over 1,400 leaves.
